Your Thoughts Matter - Work with your SMS onboard and help the System Improve

By: Roger Arcega Jr. M.M.

There is no perfect Safety Management System (SMS), your thoughts matter when it comes to improving the onboard experience for your SMS. As a key player in the safety culture of your organization, your input and feedback are crucial in identifying areas for improvement and implementing areas for improvement and implementing changes that will enhance the effectiveness of your SMS.

Working with your SMS to help it improve onboard starts with actively engaging with the system and understanding its components and processes. By familiarizing yourself with the SMS framework and requirements, you can better identify gaps and inefficiencies that may exist within the system.

One way to contribute to the improvement of your SMS is by providing regular feedback on its performance. This can include reporting safety concerns, suggesting improvements, and sharing best practices that have proven successful in enhancing safety outcomes. By actively participating in safety reporting and incident investigations, you can help identify root causes of safety issues and work towards implementing corrective actions that will prevent future incidents.

Collaborating with your colleagues and management team is also essential in improving your SMS. By fostering open communication and a culture of safety within your organization, you can work together to identify and address safety challenges and develop solutions that will enhance the overall safety performance of your operations.

To enhance the effectiveness of the Safety Management System (SMS) onboard vessel, consider implementing the following innovative ideas:

  • Establish a Safety Committee comprised of representatives from different departments onboard. This committee can regularly review safety procedures, identify potential risks, and collaborate on developing strategies to enhance safety measures.
  • By involving the crew members from various roles, the Safety Committee can provide valuable insights and ensure that safety initiatives are tailored to the specific needs of the vessel.
