Fire Fighting (FIFI) on Offshore Vessels- The Hows and Whys

Firefighting operations on offshore vessels, also known as FIFI (Firefighting) operations, are crucial for ensuring the safety of personnel and assets in the offshore industry. Offshore vessels, such as oil rigs, drilling platforms, and Anchor Handling and Platform Supply Vessels are at risk of fire due to the presence of flammable materials, machinery, and equipment. In the event of fire, quick and effective firefighting operations are essential to prevent the spread of the fire and minimize damage.
FIFI systems on offshore vessels are designed to provide the necessary equipment and capabilities to fight fires effectively. These systems typically include firefighting pumps, monitors, foam systems, and water cannons that can deliver high volumes of water or foam to extinguish fires. The FIFI system is usually integrated into the vessel’s overall firefighting equipment and is operated by trained personnel who are familiar with firefighting procedures and techniques.
When a fire is detected on an offshore vessel or rig, the FIFI system is activated, and firefighting personnel spring into action to assess the situation and determine the best course of action. The FIFI system allows for the rapid deployment of firefighting equipment and resoureces to the location of the fire, enabling a quick response to contain and extinguish the flames.
In addition to the FIFI system, offshore vessels are also equipped with other fire safety measures, such as fire alarms, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and emergency evacuation procedures. Regular drills and training sessions are conducted to ensure that crew members are well-prepared to respond to fire emergencies and that all firefighting equipment is in good working condition.
